NBC Chooses Not to Renew Surface
Today is a sad day. I just read that NBC will NOT renew Surface next season. We should all take a moment and remember the series. We laughed, we cried, we cringed. I wonder what happened after the tsunami. And were the creatures really good or bad?
Oh well. Complete Reviews here: ...
"Surface" Debuts Tonight on NBC
Don’t forget that Surface debuts tonight at 8 PM (EST) on NBC. According to the official website, the show deals with what life would be like if a “new form of sea life began to appear” on earth: “The organisms are beautiful, but are these innocent creatures more than what they seem? Embark on this unfathomable journey to discover what might be lurking just below the surface.” Gulp. I don't know how much scuba diving the show is going to feature, but there's gotta be at least some, right?
That Surface airs opposite Arrested Development’s season debut is, in my mind, a crime. Thank God for TiVo. ...
Surface: Episode 13 Reviewed (Sort Of)
Last night at 7:45, I went on a nice walk with my wife and dog. The sky was
clear; the stars were sparkling; the reflection of the lights on the water was beautiful. Confident that my TiVo was
recording Surface, I enjoyed myself immensely. Consequently, imagine my horror when, upon my return, I discovered that
my TiVo had mysteriously failed me! Why hadn’t it recorded? What was the problem? Even this morning, I have no
clue; suffice it to say, I was totally confused by the last 10 minutes of the show: What was that Chewbacca-looking
thing that attacked Rich?! Why did Lee threaten to kill Martha Plimpton’s character?! Why was he in the film Rich
and Laura found dated 1957?! And is Miles now the Pied Piper of the creatures?! Ugh! I was so confused.
Anyway, if you, like me, missed the episode last night, I found a couple of good summaries of the show. The first,
from Bob on TV Squad is a coherent account of the
episode. The second, from John Kenneth
Muir, includes a suggestion that, in the event of ...
Interviews With The Stars of "Surface"
Hey! Don’t forget
that the Season Finale of Surface is Monday night. We’re supposed to get all our
questions answered in a single hour of television. (Somehow, I doubt that, but I still want to see what
happens.)
Anyway, if you’re getting geared up for the Finale, check out these interviews with some of the stars of the
show. Bob, over at TV
Squad, recently interviewed Carter Jenkins, the 14-year-old who plays Miles. A few weeks ago, Bob also interviewed Jay R.
Ferguson, who plays Rich. Meanwhile, Sci-Fi Brain recently sat down and spoke with Lake Bell, who
plays Dr. Laura Daughtery. And a few weeks before that, the Brain spoke
with Carter Jenkins, too. All of them are good interviews and well worth your time. ...
Surface Episode 12 Reviewed, And Five Reasons Why the Episode Was Awesome!
The 12th episode of Surface aired this week, and it was a real doozey! I loved it. Even my
wife, who has made fun of the show repeatedly, came running in from the other room, asking, “What
happened!?” In my book, the show earned high marks for turning what was once a Disney-esque sci-fi story into a
real, genuine thrill-o-rama. Final grade: A , with the note that this was one of the juiciest, most surprising hours of
television this season. ...

Surface: Episode 11 Reviewed (and Several Predictions Made)
It’s been a while since Episode 10, but last night the new episode of Surface aired. I was afraid that since I hadn’t watched it in a few weeks,
I might be confused or bored. However, the show was really good. Laura finally got the footage of the creatures on TV;
Nim isn’t really dead; and Miles…well…Miles is becoming super-human. Unfortunately, the middle of
the show dragged somewhat, so I’m only going to give it a B-plus. Nevertheless, it really excited me for the
run-up to the season finale! ...

Surface: Reviewed
Last night, I watched Surface,
which explores the existence of mysterious underwater sea monsters. A mix of 24, Alias, Aliens, and the Discovery Channel, the premiere set
up a season sure to be filled with passionate researchers, numerous twists, government
cover-up, and plenty of opportunity for special effects. The first hour only
featured about 3 minutes of diving (spearfishermen hunting on a Louisianan oil
rig), but there was a great submersible sequence. For the pilot episode, I give
it an A-. For a complete review – which has a spoiler! – click the jump link. ...
Surface: Episode 7
I missed Surface: Episode 6, because the power was out at my house. However, Bob over at TV Squad has a nice summary if you were without power, too, and want to catch up. Thankfully, the utility company got my power restored (after ONLY 12 days), and I was able to watch Episode 7 last night. It was good, if you’re into car chases. I like the SCIENCE part of Surface way more than the FICTION part of Surface, and last night’s episode was light on the science, so I’m only going to give it a B. (Plus, it had one amazingly stupid scene, which distracted me from, like, the next ten minutes of the show.)

Surface: Episode 9 Reviewed
I watched Surface: Episode 9 last night, and it was pretty good, but not quite what I’d hoped for from the previews. I hoped it was going to be a celluloid frenzy of creatures killing humans, but that’s not what I got. Essentially, it was one long (uh…very long) build-up to a good cliffhanger. Sadly, I’m only going to give it a B. I was bored.

Surface: Episode 8 Reviewed
OK, I could have called this post, “Surface: Episode 8, The Greatest Episode (of Surface) Ever,” but I opted for restraint. OK, they’ve only made 8 episodes so far, meaning they had a 12.5% chance of making the greatest one, but they did. That counts for something, right?
The silly Disney-themed relationship between Miles and Nim is over; Laura and Rich descend 4000 feet in a homemade sub to find the creatures breeding!; and the show ends with one super-suspenseful cliffhanger (should I say venthanger?)! And next week promises to be gruesome, mysterious and terrifying. I’m mad as hell that Arrested Development has been cancelled, but I’m thrilled that Surface is here to keep me occupied on Mondays.
Final grade for Episode 8: a solid, solid A. ...
Surface: Episode 8 On Tonight
Hey, all. Just a reminder that Surface: Episode 8 is on NBC tonight at 8 (EST). I think it’s going to be one of the best episodes so far. According to the previews, Rich, Laura, and Jackson build their own sub, drop in the water, and – in an effort to learn more about the creatures – investigate some mysterious hydrothermal vents 4000 feet below the surface of the ocean! If you want to watch, but you’re afraid you might not know what’s going on, here’s a recap from Episode 7. Tune in and check it out. ...
Surface...on NBC
Just got a heads up on a new program airing on NBC called Surface about...well, I think it's about some kind of angry, unknown animal who lives in the deep ocean, but is brought to the, um, surface, to wreak havok on mankind and ruin a couple of good aquariums. Or at least one. There is a trailer online you can check it out. To be honest, it doesn't look half bad, and it's certainly nice to see a program like this instead of another office or family-based sitcom. I give the networks soem credit for finally breaking away from that genre and giving us shows like Lost and Tommy Lee Goes to College...oh, wait. Scratch that last one. ...
Surface: Episode 2
After last week’s episode of Surface, I was ambivalent about watching again: I wanted to see what happened with Miles, Laura, Bruce, and the creature(s), but I was afraid the show was going to turn silly and lose direction. As it turned out, I was mostly satisfied. On the downside, the episode was slow; it jumped around a lot and was somewhat confusing to follow; and some of the scenes didn’t make sense. On the other hand, the plot line moved forward; the show answered a few questions about the creature; and we even got to see several good shots of a baby. I’ll give it a B+. (If you asked my wife, though, I think she’d score it lower; at one point, she asked me, “Do people actually watch this?”)

Ten Things I Like About Surface
When I went running last night, I thought about Surface. I was planning to write a post titled Ten Things Surface Could Do to Improve. (Is it wrong that I write the post in my head before I watch the episode?) Well, in this case, it was a waste of time, because many of the things that I had been hoping for actually happened. OK, I never hoped that the g-man would say, “You know that unequivocably?” Despite his bad pronunciationism, I still think Episode 4 is the best yet: a solid A. ...
Interview With Surface's "Rich"
For all you Surface fans, Bob at TV Squad has a good interview with Jay R. Ferguson, who plays Rich on the show. Ferguson explains that they’re in the middle of filming Episode 11 and talks about how delighted he is with the show’s success. It’s a quick read, and although he doesn’t provide too many hints on the rest of the season, you can kind of tease out where the show might be headed. Or I might be reading between the lines. If you’re not into podcasts, don’t worry: the interview is transcribed from a recording.
