However, many other attendees were as interested in the people as they were in the stuff. Take, for example, DivePhotoGuide's Jason Heller. When I strolled the floor with him, we couldn't move 10 feet without someone stopping to speak to him. It was amazing.

It should come as no surprise, then, that DivePhotoGuide's show coverage focuses more on the human side of the event -- the people behind the stuff. If you've ever wondered what Ty Sawyer, or David Doubilet, or Amos Nachoum, or alligator butter look like, check out DPG and get an eye-full.

Yes, Jason got a photo of "alligator butter."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DEMA 2006: Wetpixel's Underwater Photography Wrap-Up

Filed under: Events, Photography, Blogs, Experts, Video Cameras, Still Cameras, Lighting, Other, DEMA 2006

<img id="vimage_1" height="133" alt="Titan housing shot by E. Though I briefly covered some of the Sea & Sea housings, Top Dawg housings, and, of course, Light & Motion's sleek, sexy housings, when it came time to spotlight imaging products, I decided to defer to the professionals. And by "professionals," of course, I mean the geniuses at Wetpixel.

Providing in-depth, detailed analysis, Eric Cheng and Drew Wong covered camera and video camera equipment (respectively) like crazy. Each time I passed them on the show floor, they were scribbling furiously, snapping pictures, grilling vendors, and inspecting equipment. (Well...at least Eric was.) If you want the lowdown on Fisheye, L&M, Seacam, SeaLife, Patima, Ultralight, Sea & Sea, Aquatica... -- Whew! You get the idea! -- then check out Eric Cheng's exhaustive DEMA Show coverage. More interested in video? Check out Drew's video products round-up. In either case, you'll get the low-down on all the newest underwater imaging equipment.

(If you think imaging equipment is boring, then at least check out Eric's fun people-at-DEMA photo galleries. Some of the booths featured dive-related organizations that were more service-oriented as opposed to profit-motivated. For example, Diveheart was present. The purpose of Diveheart is to provide and support educational scuba diving and snorkeling experience programs for physically impaired children or adults. Inspiring confidence and independence helps these people face life's challenges and overcome barriers that might otherwise seem insurmountable. After all, what greater fear is there to overcome than the fear of not breathing?!

Organizing events, and facilitating dive trainings and trips (lots of trips), Diveheart works hard to help disabled divers -- like Matthew Johnston, who was there at DEMA -- achieve their dreams. Divehearts' booth may not have been the biggest or most crowded on the show floor, but it was certainly filled with the most passion. If you're interested, Diveheart has plenty of ways for you to get involved.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DEMA 2006: Aquacom's SSB-2010 Transceiver

Filed under: Events, Communication, DEMA 2006

While having somebody talking in your ear throughout a dive might be annoying, if you're a new student, an underwater researcher, into search-and-rescue, or just really crazy about the guy driving the boat, you might be interested in Aquacom's SSB-2010 transceiver. Wondering who would leave their table unattended, I approached cautiously and grabbed a flyer. Was this a trick? Was Alan Funt behind me? Nope. It turns out that the flyer was for the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame Awards Night, to be held January 25th, 2007. Why wasn't anybody at the table? Dunno...bathroom break?

In any event, upon returning home, I decided to learn a bit more about the Awards. It turns out that there's a whole she-bang planned, from a week-long dive extravaganza (January 22-28) with the induction ceremony scheduled for the evening of the 25th. Don't ask me why the Scuba Hall of Fame has inductees for 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and then completely skips 2006. I don't know if nobody qualified last year, or if something weird was going on, but in any event, the Hall of Fame plans to induct 5 famous divers in January of '07, including:

Neville Coleman

Some of the bags were as big as a person. These bags are for commercial use and are designed to be used by a single diver. Each of the bags comes with a Plunger Dump Valve, which provides air control with a push-button knob at the top of the bag and a lanyard at the bottom of the bag.

Subsalve also makes a Vehicle Recovery System (VRS). Used in pairs, the VRS makes floating sunken cars easier.

Much to my surprise, the booth attendant explained to me that the bags on display were actually quite small. Subsalve also produces professional-grade lift bags -- like the PF 70,000 -- which is more than 21 feet tall and is capable of lifting 77,000 pounds.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DEMA 2006: Metalsub Dive Lights

I was browsing my gallery of images from the DEMA show, and found this truly, truly stunning picture I had clearly overlooked.

Well...maybe the word "stunning" is a bit strong, but at least it gives a sense of the kind of variety Metalsub offers in terms of dive lights. Strong and sturdy-feeling in your hand, Metalsub's lightweight metal housings are fashioned with a chemical-hardened surface layer that makes the torches practical for both sport and technical divers. Individually pressure-tested to 825 feet before leaving their manufacturing facility, Metalsub's cable lights can be attached to your tank via a bracket (the rectangular strips on the rear of the table). Featuring variable light power and a no-brainer battery capacity indicator, I was really impressed with the rugged-ness of the lights.

Underwater shooters will dig the Unilamp, which is a light developed for photo and video recording (sorry, not shown). They also have a variety of hand-held lights that fit nicely in the palm, feel fantastically solid, and can be easily handled -- even wearing gloves.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DEMA 2006: Review Round-up

Filed under: Events, Photography, DEMA 2006
Of course, although I strove to cover everything on the show floor, there's no way I could do that. Here I am with Matthew Johnston, the man with MD who's learning to dive.
Geeks reunite!

DEMA was truly an international affair. Here's a pack of cigarettes from Korea. Part of the packaging looks "normal," but there's something strange about the warning.

The Show Floor was so huge, that DEMA provided a tram to take you around. Looking back, I guess I should've tried using it once, because I was pooped at the end of each day. It looks like these guys thought the tram was a wise move.

Manta Industries was showing off their new, ultra-simple regulator necklaces.

DEMA raised money for charity by sponsoring a dunk tank. Call me shallow or easily swayed, but all the colors and the open floor plan make me want to go over, browse, and touch the gear. For those of you who don't know, Mary Lynn runs DiveFilm, which is an outstanding site hosting short video podcasts relating to the dive world. Mary Lynn, herself, contributes some of the work on DiveFilm, but she's not alone: other awesome videographers have added their work to the DiveFilm library. if you haven't checked it out, you really should (and subscribe to their feed on iTunes!).

The seminar, called "Editing Basics for Underwater Videographers and Photographers," was aimed largely at people who want to understand how video can increase their bottom line (selling dive travel, underwater housings, etc.). While Mary Lynn explained the concept of video-as-marketing-tool, she also did an excellent job including some practical information for n00bs who want to learn how to begin shooting and editing their own dive films. Of course, like with most things, practice is the only way to improve, but Mary Lynn hammered home the idea that:

Anybody can make videos.

It's easy.

It's fun.

After attending the seminar, I can't wait to get my own video camera and get cracking!

I took notes during her presentation. What follows are my notes.10:54 AM
I'm in room S320D, preparing to hear Mary Lynn Price speak on video editing. In her presentation, "Editing Basics for Underwater Videographers and Photographers," she plans to introduce n00bs to video editing. At present, she's going over what she's going to be going over during her official presentation.

11 AM
Mary Lynn introduces herself. A former trial attorney, she opens with some good lawyer jokes (Q. "Why don't sharks eat lawyers?" A. "Professional courtesy.") She discusses Dive.Film.com and briefly explains what it is. She also concisely defines podcast ("alternative content distibution"). She claims shooting and editing video can be done easily, even for people who don't already do it. She also claims the Video Revolution is just beginning.

11:10 AM
Thanks to high-speed Internet access, Price claims more and more people are accessing video online. Moreover, people are creating content and sharing it online. For example, DiveFilm is featured on iTunes alongside Nat Geo shorts -- and she does her work for very little money. Examples of sites that use video effectively include Light & Motion, Eric Hanauer, DUI-Online, and San Diego Shark Diving (a company for whom Price used to work).

11:20 AM
Considering she's selling people on WHY video is important for modern times, she's explaining different kinds of video formats, including videos set to music (the bulk of dive-related videos, including "Sharks and Their Kin with Marty Snyderman," a portion of which she previews), and documentary videos, which include so-called interviews and storytelling without words. Price claims there's no such thing as "B-roll" or cutaway footage; everything you shoot and use is "A-roll." Using a Sony A1U HD camera inside a Light & Motion housing, Mary Lynn shows how to cut a day's footage of shark diving -- or interviews with professionals, like Eric Cheng -- into a short asset.

11:30 AM
What you need:

Camera (she uses the Sony A1U HD camera but also recommends the new, small HC3 camera, which is roughly half the price)

External mics for interviews

Light & Motion A1U Bluefin housing (depends on your camera, of course)

Video editing programs (she uses Final Cut Pro)

11:32 AM
Shoot to edit! -- editing begins before the dive

Think about what story you want to shoot on the dive

Get tight, medium, and wide shots

Leave "handles" before and after the action is going on

Transition shots

11:35 AM
Editing Basics:

Capture the footage and put it into the computer

She uses Final Cut Pro, but she's showing how to use iMovie -- it's so, so easy.

Edit (build sequence)

Don't know how to begin?

Try selecting the music first and choose the images to accompany the soundtrack

Assembly edit -- put it together so it makes intuitive sense for a viewer (beginning of interview, middle, end...). Perhaps, begin with the audio track.

Music

Mark the beats in the music and match the marks to the footage.

Use legal soundtracks.

Make your own music.

Buy it (smartsound.com)

Get a musician friend to contribute.

Google "Royalty-free sound effects"

Output (send final product to storage or delivery medium)
