Based on American Sign Language (ASL) and approved by most major SCUBA certifying agencies, Sea Signs has a vocabulary chosen especially for divers. Through classwork, video presentations, PDFs, and flash cards, divers can learn more than 100 signs for dive-related words like vomit, nudibranch, tired, and shark. (Incidentally, according to Sea Signs, the commonly-used hand gesture for shark is actually an obscene word in ASL! Oops.) For a taste of what Sea Signs is all about, check out their Sign of the Week.

Scheduled for the weekend of July 28-30, customers can save up to 50% on every imaginable kind of dive gear from companies like Atomic, Apollo, Atlan, Cetacea, DeepSee, DiveRite, DUI, Harvey's, High Tide, Ikelite, JBL, Light & Motion, Mares, McNett, Northern Diver, Oceanic, OMS, O'Neill, PADI, Pelican, ScubaPro, SeaLife, Sea & Sea, SeaSoft, Stahlsac, Trident, USIA, Underwater Kinetics, Viking, XS Scuba, and Zeagle.

According to Calvin Tang, who attended last year's event, "this is honestly, hands down, the best time and place to gear up - especially if you've recently got into scuba." In fact, this year's sale features over 100,000 items, including thousands of regulators, thousands of suits, thousands of computers, and hundreds of tanks. Calvin claims the best part of the event is that all the reps show up to answer questions and to demonstrate their equipment.

Sadly for me, the Fair couldn't be much farther away and still be in the same country. This is too bad, especially since I dropped my reg off to be serviced this week. Upon seeing my vintage Dacor unit, the repairman's eyes popped out of his head and he reminded me that Dacor's replacement parts are hard to come by. Depending on the news he gives me, it may be time to buy a new reg. I could certainly use one at 50% off. Maybe Calvin can buy me one and ship it to me.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Scuba Show Report

Filed under: Events, Organizations, Beginners, Experts, Video Cameras, Still Cameras, Communication, Computers, BCs, Regs, Lighting, Masks, O-Rings, Repellent, Spearguns, Tanks, Wetsuits, Other
I went to the Scuba Show in Long Beach on Sunday, checked out the exhibits and ran into some friends. I've been planning on going to the yearly Scuba Show for 5 years but something always comes up. This year, I put the event in my calendar and made myself go to it.

Southern Californian's define everything on not how far away something is but on how long will take you to get there. This is because we are very proud of our traffic, and I can report today that we had a good traffic day, so I arrived in Long Beach in short order.

The conference costs $9.00 to attend per day and I got my money's worth.

Dive Xtras

Makers of the Xscooter and other "X" products, they had a number of their products including scooters, video camera mounts, pockets and travel cases available and had a very busy booth. They also had a new 2.5 hour Lithium battery, normal battery is approx 50 min, the cost of the battery is still being worked out but it's more than my first car cost me. However, it's an option for a cave diver wanting extra burn time or ocean divers on liveaboards.

Scuba Schools of America (SSA)

SSA brought out some interesting dive gear that they carry and had a very cool motorcycle with an underwater theme, check out the dolphin spokes on the wheels.

DiveNames

Next I stopped by DiveNames, they make a shirt with your name embroidered on it with the red and white colors of the dive flag we all know and love. A fledgling business that was started over a camp fire, they had a line of people signing up for their products, they were pretty busy but I got them together for a quick picture.

Deep Sea Supply

I've beta tested some of Deep Sea Supply's gear and conversed with it's owner, Tobin George, via email, for over a year now, so this was a chance to introduce myself in person. They had a lot of interesting gear, including a pink colored diving wing. I was really interested in the new materials they are using in there wings, that make them resistant to puncture.

Halycon

I stopped by Halcyon's booth and checked out the new lights that they have coming out. The big news at the Halcyon booth was the new light they developed. It's a standard cannister light that has some improvements, like a protected light switch and an innovative sealed cannister that will not flood even if the light cord is severed.

National Underwater Museum

I discovered a gem when I was walking the aisles and found the National Underwater Museum, it had a collection of old diving equipment, including what was described as the oldest diving kit. Of course, I took a really bad picture of it, so you can't read the text but it said it was actually a few years earlier than Cousteau's Aqualung. The gentleman running the booth said they found it, unused, in a factory in France.

After I spent my time at the show, I made the long drive back to San Diego.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

London International Dive Show, April 1 & 2

Filed under: Events, Organizations, Beginners, Experts, Video Cameras, Still Cameras, Communication, Computers, BCs, Regs, Lighting, Masks, Spearguns, Tanks, Wetsuits, Other, Red Sea, Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Ocean, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Arctic, Southern Ocean, Lakes

The26th Annual London International Dive Show is scheduled forSaturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2, in <city></city>

Consequently, we resort to the next best thing, which usually involves gesturing insome fashion that makes perfect sense to you, but that suggests to your buddy that you're narc'ed.

In an effort to minimize misunderstanding and to ensure smooth communication no matter what language you speak, themember organizations of the Recreational Scuba Training Council (RSTC) - whichincludes IDEA, PADI, PDIC, SDI, SSI, and the YMCA - have recently approved a standardized set of underwater handsignals. Conveniently, they have produced a clear (PDF) outlining the most important handsignals to know. Initially, I was annoyed that I knew all the signals. For some reason, I wanted to discover somenew, innovative signal that would revolutionize the way I dive. Alas, it did not happen. Upon further reflection, however, I was pleased that I knew all the signals, because it proved once again that <strike>I am agenius</strike> <strike>that I am more capable of writing for Divester than any of you that</strike> Iam at least semi-competent.

When that disk vibrates, it generatesa loud "quacking" sound. In this way, the Scub-Alert allows you to signal your dive buddy simply by pressing abutton. Or call some ducks. Considering the range of the horn on the surface is 0.25 to 0.5 mile, you'd bewise to note the warning: "Horn is very loud above water. Keep away fromears at all times." You can have your own ear-piercing horn for around $55.

The same company also manufactures the Inflat-Alert, whichcombines the power inflator and the Scub-Alert into a single unit. Using this combination device eliminates theneed for an extra length of hose that the Scub-Alert adds to your L/P inflator configuration.

Sold as a pair, theSCUBuzz is a two-way ultrasonic radio transmitter/receiver that connects two people - even if one is on thesurface. To buzz your buddy, press the button and it signals the person (with vibrations and lights) wearing the mateto your pair. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the vibrating and the lights - I'd probably have aheart attack when I got SCUBuzzed the first time! - but I do like the idea of not wondering whether the rapping Ihear is my buddy, someone else's buddy, or the gills of the fast-approaching shark. For those of you who don't speak English, er, British, their "Kit of the Year" is a round-up of the gear they consider most outstanding, unique, or noteworthy - basically, stuff that really helps to improve the dive experience. Divester reported on some of the stuff this year - like Aqualung's Mistral - but some of the other stuff might be new to you. My old stereo equipment still works great, but it was too big and ugly and bulky for our new house. So what did I do with all the old equipment? Naturally, I shoved it into the laundry room, where it has sat for the past few months. I've made a pact with myself that if I haven't gotten rid of it by the New Year, then I have to donate it to a worthy cause. (And, no, another shelf in the laundry room does NOT constitute a worthy cause.)

Evidently, Vicky Roberts had a similar issue with her scuba gear. She believes that as people upgrade their equipment, they wind up with surplus equipment that is still quite usable. According to the Cheshire Online, Vicky's research found that bidding and auctions tend be a turn-off, so she set up Scuba Kit Market for people to buy and sell their gear. The website doesn't use auctions, bidding, or charge a commission (unless you sell an item). Rather, the price you see is the price you pay and includes delivery and VAT. (Yes, the site is based in the <country-region></country-region><place></place>UK.) There isn't a ton of gear on the website yet, but I think this sounds like a cool way to buy (selected) gear, although, frankly, I'd be wary about purchasing certain used gear, online. A little cautious investigation might reveal some good deals, however.

I always like to take a look at Scuba equipment recalls, mainly because scuba diving equipment is Life Support equipment and when you think of it that way, you don't want to screw around life support equipment. Some of these are old, some more recent but this list is mainly for you who have never stopped to think that anything other than cars, tires, or coffee makers could have a recall.

Actually, it has nothing to do with being a Friday. I just thought I'd do it. As a caveat before I get started: they may not all be submersible. Here goes:

1.) Earlier in the year, we profiled H2O Audio's waterproof housing for iRiver's MP3 player. Waterproof to 200 feet, the DV i300 housing will set you back $200.

2.) The WaveCase is a shockproof, waterproof (to 60 feet) that lets you send text messages to the fam on the beach and morphs the average camera phone into an underwater camera (so you can send them photos of you and that shark). The WaveCase retails for about $100.

3.) Developed for the US Army, the Ectaco SpeechGuard features thousands of the most common phrases clearly and loudly reproduced in more than 50 languages. With the SpeechGuard, you can finally ask the dive captain, "Where's the marine head?"

4.) Lilipods are waterproof, hard shell casings that protect your iPod. While you can't take them underwater, they let you carry your little jewel to the beach, on the boat, or while judging a wet t-shirt contest. The Lilipod is $40; the Lilimini is $35. (As a bonus, Make has pictures of a Waterproof iPod Shuffle case.)

5.) The aquaSketch is the lowest-tech piece of equipment on the list. It's the only effective way to create permanent work in writing, drafting, or illustration underwater. Used by NASA, the aquaSketch is a wrist-mounted, phosphorescent case containing a roll of plastic vellum. The aquaSketch allows you to create multiple pages of drawings without erasing. Cost: $40.

6.) SeaLife has a new digital underwater camera on the market for $549, which includes a docking station, international plugs, a photo editing program, a rechargeable lithium battery, and a carrying case. The DC500 also features a 2" LCD, full rubber armoring, ergonomic button designs, and a new auto focus system able to focus as close as two inches. External flash not included.

7.) Jetboots are leg-mounted thrusters that allow a diver to have the benefits of a scooter and still have full use of both hands (to protect his head before he crashes into that reef). The average speed for JetBoots is 3 knots.

8.) Ninety Degrees South is a 2-person vehicle for Arctic exploration that uses a scouting <stockticker></stockticker>GPS to hunt for possible crevasses. With Ninety Degrees South, your next Arctic dive trip will be oh-so-much toastier.

9.) Israeli inventor Alon Bodner claims to have designed a tankless underwater breathing apparatus. His "TUBA" has already received several EU patents and is currently winding its way through the US Patents Office.

10.) The Nikon D2X with a Seacam housing will set you back over 10 grand, but the pictures you produce with the D2X will be so awesome that you won't ever have to speak again.

Did I omit something?

SuperMask is a "convertible" full-face mask that eliminates the problems
typically associated with combining your mask and breathing system. The SuperMask
features a removable lower pod that allows for easy buddy-breathing, surface
communications, snorkeling, or performing an "in water" gas switch. Plus, it makes you look something like an astronaut!

The $500 set-up gets you a low-volume mask, carrying bag,
mouthpiece, tie-wraps, communications port plugs, and second stage inlet swivel.
