Rather, the HERA is designed and contoured specifically for the female body. Created with assistance from more than 300 female scuba divers, the HERA features a special hybrid bladder that combines the benefits of both rear inflation and jacket-style BCs. Moreover, the BC boasts a custom-fit harness with a multi-position shoulder strap, an integrated weight system, reinforced shoulders, a padded back pack, and an adjustable position sternum strap. Get yours for $479.

Question: if women designed the BC, why is it boring blue-and-black? Did the men take over when it came time to choose the color coordination?

[Via DiverWire]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

What's In Your Dive Bag? Don't use household cleaners, go to your dive shop and buy one specially formulated for scuba diving equipment. Follow the directions and don't forget to rinse your gear with fresh water.

Really people...disinfect your gear? DAN claims there is no documented proof of viral, bacterial, or fungal infections brought on by diving.

How do I clean my gear? I hang it up outside and douse repeatedly with fresh water. Drip dry, return to storage. When I lived in an apartment I let it soak in the tub for awhile before the drip dry.

Considering my entire body is immersed in the ocean and has touched my lips and been ingested in small amounts, disinfecting my gear is probably the least of my worries.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

What's In Your Dive Bag - West Coast Edition

Filed under: Computers, BCs, Regs, Lighting, Masks, Wetsuits, Other
Willy showed us some East Coast style with the contents of his dive bag. Compact and to the point. On the other hand we've got my bag throwing down some West Coast style. Neither compact or trim, it's all about bulky neoprene for Southern California waters in the range of 50-70 degrees F.

The gear is around five years old so there isn't much which needs changing, but a drysuit (or semi-dry) is mighty tempting! Then check out Scuba Diving Magazine's ScubaLab, which recently compared 14 BCs.

Inspecting everything from ergonomics, to buoyancy, to valve flow rate, to whether the owner's manual matched the actual BC presented, ScubaLab details exactly what they do and don't like about each piece of gear presented. Covering jacket-style BCs, back buoyancy BCs, and lightweight travel BCs, ScubaLab has the low down on all the hot, new gear that all the cool kids'll be wearing next summer.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Beuchat's Mysterious New X-Air Light BC

Beuchat's new X-Air Light BC is so new you can't even find it on Beuchat's web site. The X-Air Light is different from the original X-Air because it's, well, the "lite" version designed for the frequent traveler.

After looking at the specs in the press release I'm not sure there is much difference between the BCs (aside from weight). Differences between Light and heavy:

Single bladder, 840 denier cordura (compared to 1000)

Updated system to distribute front/back ballast for "perfect buoyancy"

30% lighter

All those adjustable doo-dads sure must be costly, because the masterlift TEK runs in the neighborhood of $950.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Zeagle's Ascent Freediving BC Belt

One of the most interesting things I saw at the Florida Dive Show was Zeagle's Ascent Freediving BC Belt.

The Ascent Freediving BC gives freedivers the benefits of a BC -- by helping them ascend and descend -- but is streamlined enough to facilitate easy swimming.
Featuring an 11-pound lift capacity Ballistic Bladder and a front-mount dump-valve with an integrated over-pressure valve, the Ascent Freediving BC carries either a 4 or 6 cubic foot aluminum cylinder and a valve/regulator first stage combination.

According to Zeagle, an average freediver can make a dozen or more dives before needing to refill the Ascent.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DEMA 2006: Dive Rite's TransPac

Filed under: Events, BCs, Other, DEMA 2006
Although not brand-spanking new, Dive Rite featured their TransPac at the DEMA show. Whereas their old model was fairly de rigeur, the new version is spiffed up pretty well with some innovative new features. Plus, who doesn't love red?
One of the coolest things about the new Pro QD is the way the octopus is handled. Rather than drag behind the diver, the octopus is placed inside a little pocket of its own -- called an Octo Pocket -- where it sits patiently until it's needed. Stored right inside the BC, the octo can be easily and simply removed if needed. In the past, sometimes I've stuck my octo underneath my shoulder strap to keep it out of the way. Who knew that if I'd sewn a little pocket inside my BC and pitched it to AquaLung, I could've retired. <Sigh...>

The REALLY cool, new feature on the Pro QD is its inflator/deflator. No longer a hose that does double-duty as a purge valve, the new inflator/deflator is an intuitive design: lift a red tab, and the BC inflates; depress a red tab, and the BC deflates. This is a cool, no-duh kind of design leap -- the tab is right where your hands are; it's simple to use (tab up...body up); and there's less to get all tangled up with up near your shoulders. Between the Octo Pocket and the new inflator tab, I think the Pro QD is the coolest BC on the market.

The newly-designed Pro QD will be available in January for $655.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DEMA 2006: Rebreathers Everywhere

Filed under: Events, BCs, Tanks, Other, DEMA 2006
Rebreathers are popular at DEMA this year. I could've spent hours shooting pictures of rebreathers and digging into them. However, I selected just a few booths at which to stop and view their selection. First, I hit Silent Diving's booth.
They had about a dozen rebreathers in their booth -- all identical -- like giant yellow bushes planted in their assigned spaces. It was kind of surreal. I tried to photograph the scene, but I couldn't back up far enough to get the whole rebreather-farm in the frame.

The Inspiration Closed Circuit is the first CE approved closed circuit breathing system -- it's approved to 150 feet with air as the diluent gas and 300 feet with Heliox as the diluent. The Inspiration comes standard with Trim Weight Pockets, APD Communicator software and PC interface, Head-Up Displays, Dual Power Supplies, Audible Warnings, and Automatic Setpoint Switch.

My head reeling from all that rebreather jargon, I headed over to Closed Circuit Research and checked out their Ouroboros Rebreather. Cleverly-named, the Ouroboros is fully redundant and features manual override on all the primary functions.

Featuring a carbon Kevlar shell, plug-in gas compatibility for boat/bailout scenarios, and data logging and training modes, the Ouroboros also boasts hands-free operation and head-mounted displays.

Here's what it looks like under the hood:

When I saw the sticker on the inside that read "DEATH" in big red letters, I decided it was time to go see something else.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DEMA 2006: I Like the Mares Display AND Their New Travel BCs

Filed under: Events, BCs, DEMA 2006
Some of the displays at DEMA are closed-in, contained, and store-like. I think the idea is that if you're inside the booth, you may feel more private, it'll be easier to hear, and you'll linger longer. Personally, though, when I'm in those booths, I feel like I'm trapped. Consequently, I was pretty pleased with Mares' open layout -- as well as the content within it...
In addition to showcasing their new line of colorful, "fashionable" dive gear for the upcoming season --

-- they were also proudly displaying some of their new BCs.

As someone who hates bulky BCs, I was immediately drawn to their new travel BCs, the Icon (for men) and the Aliikai (for women). When folded, the BCs are super-compact -- roughly the size of a large travel-pillow...but maybe a little harder.

When unfurled, however, the BCs are standard-issue, with 5 D-rings, dual-position hose clips, and more. Here's the Icon...
And here's the Aliikai...

Each BC comes with its own, handy bag into which you can stuff it -- assuming, of course, you can fold it back the way it came!

This photo may not be ideal, but it gives a nice sense of the size of the unfurled BC compared to the folded-up version. Most of my items are chosen for reasons of performance, safety, and hygiene.
Recently, I viewed the premier issue. At just under an hour long, the Dive Zero team has assembled a very engaging product that was both entertaining and informative -- which is more than I can say for most of the stuff I see on TV. If you like looking through your dive magazines during lunch breaks, while traveling, or at the beach, a DVD video magazine probably isn't going to interest you. However, if you believe the static nature of a magazine doesn't lend itself to the beauty of the dynamic, underwater world, getting your dive news via a high-def DVD will really appeal to you.

Dive Zero Issue #1 opens with "A Day In The Life," a profile of 20-year-old videographer Justin Bongers, who lives on Grand Cayman. Working for Ocean Frontiers, Bongers shoots footage of the island's east end diving and assembles it for visitors to purchase. The segment follows Bongers through a portion of his day filming both fish and guests. Although I would've liked to have seen more of Bongers in post-production (How does he assemble the footage so quickly for guests?), "A Day in the Life" is an interesting peek into the life of a dive professional.

The next section is called "Spot Check." It profiles a Canadian dive site known as Pavilion Lake, one of only three freshwater coral lakes in the world. Looking more like piles of spilled concrete than the Caribbean's coral formations, the coral footage in this segment is, nevertheless, excellent. Moreover, the segment includes practical tips (like how to get there), and some fast facts about the Lake. It sure looks like a cool, "secret" dive spot.

The third segment, "Trick Tips," was my favorite. Featuring half a dozen tips divers should know -- from how to replace a mask underwater, to how to do the frog kick -- this section was fast but thorough. Moreover, the hosts of this section seemed relaxed, knowledgeable, and confident in front of the camera. Old-timers may feel uncomfortable with teens giving them tips on diving, but the information was accurate, and their delivery was casual, yet careful. More, please!

Rounding out the premier issue is:

"Mixed Tape" -- Ryan Lohr takes viewers on a tour of a Cayman wreck, the Doc Polson.

"Danger Zone" -- This montage from Wakefest 2006 has nothing to do with diving, but is, nevertheless, very cool.

"Paradise" -- This photo essay of Grand Cayman covers some of the many bars, restaurants, and dive shops available for visitors.

"Tune Up" -- The Dive Zero team profiles two new BCs, two new regs, some deck shoes, a dive computer, and a new mask.

"Hot Spot" -- Ian Oppen dives the underwater cliffs in Canada's Kettle Valley River.

What's the verdict? I believe the Dive Zero team has something brilliant on their hands. Being able to see a specific dive site in moving images is a powerful way to learn whether you want to visit that destination. In this regard, I believe Dive Zero is more intriguing than a traditional print magazine. If you're curious to see what Grand Cayman, Pavilion Lake, or Kettle Valley is like, Dive Zero has the goods, and many of their high-def shots will likely impress you.

The same goes for gear reviews. While I can get a lot out of a blurb in a magazine about a new BC, for example, seeing people interact with gear is, in my mind, far superior. (That said, I hope Issue #2 provides more close-ups, especially for small items like a dive computer: I want to see the bells and whistles in detail, and high-def should afford that.)

However, where a print magazine trumps a video magazine is in the level of detail that accompanies most print mags. In my opinion, Dive Zero needs to offer more concrete details for divers -- How many dive sites are there? What's the best time of year to go? What's the price of that dive computer? As the Dive Zero team learns how to balance concrete, detailed information with underwater footage fun, Dive Zero will become indispensable to traveling divers.

In short, Dive Zero is filled with great underwater images and good overviews of some cool dive sites and new gear. While their new, cutting-edge format might not appeal to some people, I believe this is "the magazine of the future." Moreover, as the producers provide more information in their DVDs -- maybe with the ability to switch on and off crawl text that offers details about what's onscreen? -- Dive Zero will grow in popularity and their subscriber base will grow drastically.

If you want a sample of what the video is all about, check out their teaser on YouTube or some of the short videos they have on their site. I can't wait to see what's in Issue #2.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Travel Dive Gear

Filed under: BCs, Regs, Masks, Wetsuits, Other

Are the days of lugging around huge, back-breaking gear bags numbered? Have gear-makers discovered that many divers are not Herculean and, in fact, want bags that are easier to carry? Probably not: divers will still carry with them numerous regs, unwieldy camera set-ups, and heavy-duty drysuits. A sign outside the building read, "The Florida Keys History of Diving Museum," but the building was clearly shuttered. Curious but disappointed (and ready to enjoy the rest of my vacation), I kept driving. As it turns out, the Diving Museum opens officially this coming Wednesday (September 20). Dedicated to "collecting, preserving, displaying and interpreting artifacts, antiques, books, documents, photographs and oral history relative to the History of Diving," the museum's founders, Drs. Joe and Sally Bauer, claim to hold the largest collection of historic diving equipment and research documents in the world. Consequently, the museum should be killer. I wish I could be there for the opening.

Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays, the museum features 8 distinct rooms, from "Timeline of Diving," to "Helium Diving," to "Into the Abyss," to "Parade of Nations" -- a collection of historic hard-hat dive helmets from around the world. In addition to its standing exhibits, the Museum plans to host a lecture series, as well. Stephen Frink lives up the road in Key Largo; I wonder if he'll swing by for a chat. Located at Mile Marker 83, admission is $10/adult, $9/kid. To learn more about the Museum, check out Dive Bubbles, the Museum's newsletter. The most current newsletter is dated July, but I'm betting a new one will be available soon.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Halcyon Voluntary Recall of Select Explorer 40 BC's

Filed under: Stories, Beginners, Experts, BCs
Halcyon Voluntary Recall of Select Explorer 40 BC's (Serial Numbers Listed Below)

Halcyon Manufacturing has identified a very small number of Halcyon Explorer-40 BC's sold after July 2005 that could develop problems over time. In these few units it is possible that the over pressure valve (OPV) could delaminate, causing the BC to leak. It is unlikely that most of these units will experience any problems; yet, given its rigorous desire to produce only the finest quality equipment, Halcyon would like to ensure this problem does not affect the safety or convenience of our customers.

This problem was identified during regular quality control evaluations in which a lamination machine (RF welder) showed slight inconsistency during production. The machine has been replaced and the few BC's affected have been identified by quality control.
