Yesterday, we featured a short video discussing Yuri Lipski, a diver who died in Egypt's Blue Hole in 2000. Naturally, YouTube has some other clips concerning Lipski's death. In the first video, there is additional commentary (not in English) and additional footage, including some of Lipski's body on the sea floor, his BC unstrapped but not removed -- as if he had been trying to wriggle out of it. The second video, much shorter, is a close-up. It *appears* to me that the second clip is also of Lipski, but I may be wrong.
Warning: these videos are graphic, particularly the second. You've been warned.

3. In my opinion, these videos (including the other 'net videos on the same topic out there) do more good than harm. If they shocked you: good. It is all to easy to forget the risks associated with diving and these videos shows that 100% concentration is needed all the time. These video highlights the importance of the buddy system and demonstrate how it just takes 5mins for thing to go tragically wrong. My condolences to the family.

4. This is not Yuri... His body was recovered few days later, this one has been down there for a long time

6. Possibly a naive question from a relatively novice yet 'PADI Advanced' diver but could the hose connector to his BCD have become detached? This would cause him to continue his descent. Can anyone establish if his descent was indeed uncontrollable?

7. After having watched the head-cam video, and then reviewing these two videos I'll throw this out for discussion. In the Lipski incident there are a few things that stand out (in my opinion) about what may have happened. The first question that I would ask is what was Yuri's intended dive plan? If he was a certified instructor, he would know that one cannot dive to that depth safely on a single AL-80, do the tunnel, and then have enough air to properly decompress on the other side. Notice in the video where his remains are found that the tank has no sticker indicating NiTrox or Tri-Mix. Also, there is no sling tank either. Also, notice that his feet are missing in the second video. I will throw out this hypothesis: During his descent to do the upper tunnel of the Blue Hole (possible with a single AL-80), he was hit by a shark and pulled down. Unlikely, but not improbable. By the time he gets released, he's panicked, sucked air as fast as he can, he's too far down, and then hits the bottom at 91.6 meters, has no feet to stand on (refer to the head cam video where it appears that he is thrashing around)....and then his tank runs dry when he attempts to inflate. The other alternative idea is that he intended on conducting a bounce dive to the bottom and back on a single AL-80. Reckless, but possible. But as a dive instructor he would, or should have known that this would be irresponsible diving, and he experienced a major equipment failure. Without the dive accident report however, this is all purely speculation. Was there air left in the tank, and if so, what was the air quality? Were regs still operational? Would the BCD hold air? From the video, over-weighting doesn't look to be the cause. If he was over-weighted it looks that it could have only been by a couple of kilos of weight (notice 4 kilos on his belt, probably only enough room on his front, which we can't see, for an additional 4 kilos). Too many variables to be considered unless one has the final incident report.

8. My first question: was that his first dive? I have heard of people getting a rare form of the bends from not doing a saftey hang. The guy I know that it happened to felt a sharp pain when he surfaced from only 50 feet. He then felt better for a few minutes but soon became paralized from the waste down. That lasted for 20 to 30 minutes and then he returned to normal, but had to go to a decompression chamber. Could this diver have had a similar situation happen to him? COuld he have gone paralized. Was there anything wrong with his BC? Did he not drop his wightbelt?

9. The lower video is obviously from a different diver they found. Look at the growth on the tank, there is no "body" inside the suit to speak of. This wouldn't happen after just a couple of days, especially at that depth, things usually stay pretty well preserved.
Look at the upper video, pause it at 339 and play/pause, play/pause, etc, and you can see what looks like him (a diver) coming towards the camera on the left of the screen. You can make out the snorkel, regulator, mask, and as he goes by you can see the leg of his shorty wetsuit, and his bare leg from just above the knee down. In the first video when they are loading him on the boat, you can see he is wearing a shorty suit, and it doesn't look like he's missing his feet. Take a look, you have to be quick going from play to pause. That also explains why all of a sudden you can't here him breathing anymore. Because the camera is no longer attached to him. Let me know what you think. Am I crazy, or am I seeing what I think I am.
