Divester To Retire on January 31

Divester Sadly, this is not an April Fool's post. It's only January.

AOL, Divester's parent company, has decided to retire several of its ~~smaller, less profitable~~ long-running blogs at the end of the month. Unfortunately, Divester is one of those blogs.

I want to say thanks to everyone who reads Divester regularly and who has helped make it the best recreational dive blog on the Web, as well as the preeminent centralized, generalized news source for the dive community. In addition to the readers, I also want to thank my buddies here on Divester for working so hard with me.

So where are Divester's writers heading next? We'll let you know on January 31. In the meantime, please keep reading. There's still more good stuff coming!

10. I just found out about you! I help write a newsletter for a dive club and the infomation I've gotten from here has been great. If possible please let me know where you are so I can keep reading.

14. Hi all -- I'm the editorial director of Weblogs, Inc. I'm sorry for the sad news. Divester had a great run with us, and everyone here loves Willy and the Divester staff. Since last summer we have gradually reduced our vast lineup of blogs to better suit our evolving publishing model. Weblogs, Inc. started out a very different company than it is now, and presumably we'll keep evolving. In 2004 and 2005 we worked with the "more is better" philosophy ... bulk publishing, sort of. Now we're concentrating our resources in more defined ways. Divester has been a fun and successful site for us, and I have personally enjoyed its daily outpouring of cool content. I'm not a diver (and can't be because of pressure-sensitive ears), but Divester got me interested!

Although there won't be new entries after Feb. 1, Divester will remain up and available for reading and searching. Thanks to everyone who visited Divester for their interest!

16. Hey Brad, if "Divester has been a fun and successful site for us" why pull the plug. I can't tell you how much I look forward to reading the site every day. I have forwarded countless stories to dozens of people. There has got to be a way to continue as an active site. I'll come and clean your garage, wash your car what ever it takes. I sincerely hope AOL would reconsider this move.

17. Are you freakin' kidding me? That's it? No formal protest like the one you organized for Amazon.com's shark products? Options: 1- Try to obtain the rights to the domain and keep blogging (I and I'm sure others will help with technical stuff), 2- Keep blogging under a new domain name.

20. Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!
It's not right. "Fun and successful", but no more new entries? I visit the site at least twice a day. So much great information, news, pictures, etc. So what type of blogs did make the cut?!
Hopefully this will be one of those "We can rebuild, bigger, stronger" situations.
