Yesterday, we told you about Matthew Harvey, the diver who fought rushing tides off the Channel Islands and drifted at sea for 56 hours before being rescued. Today, new reports indicate that Harvey was, in fact, hit by a boat and knocked unconscious during his ordeal. That's frightening, of course, and very sad. However, what's even more surprising is that Harvey was apparently mothered by dolphins who watched over him until his rescue.
According to Harvey's rescuers, Anne and Steve Westwood, Harvey was surrounded by at least 150 dolphins when they found him. Mark Simmonds, of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, claims "Certainly the dolphins -- as intelligent air breathing mammals themselves -- are well known to help other wounded or dying members of their own schools get to the surface. They seem able to extend this understanding to our own situation."
Let's get this straight. Harvey was (a) missing in 63-degree water for 56 hours; (b) struck by a boat and knocked unconscious; (c) attended to by 150 dolphins; and (d) rescued by passing boaters. Harvey is one lucky dude.
