This story seems almost too odd to be true. Evidently, a couple taking a diving class in Tyler, Texas, this weekend were preparing for a pool dive when they noticed a snorkel resting on the bottom of the pool. They mentioned it to their instuctor, Barbara McAlpin, who jumped into the pool as the students were donning their diving gear. "Several minutes" later, the students noticed the instructor had failed to surface.
When they looked into the pool, they saw McAlpin at the bottom, wearing her weight belt but no scuba gear. The man pulled McAlpin from the pool and tried to revive her while his wife called for help. McAlpin was pronounced dead several hours later. Police are awaiting autopsy results before citing an official cause of death. Is it just me, or does this seem like a completely avoidable accident?

1. It's scary that this woman has certified divers. What is the first thing you do when trying to get an unconcious diver off the bottom? Remove the weight belt. I just don't see how that wasn't her first reaction when she hit the water and realized she sank like a rock. It's a tragedy, either way.
