If you're sitting there, scratching your noggin, wondering what would make the perfect vacation this summer, maybe you're thinking too hard. Take a deep breath: there's your inspiration. Evidently, one of the new fads in travel are vacations centered around freediving.
Of course, freediving requires athleticism, technique, inner strength, and more than a little dedication. In the case of William Trubridge, for instance, he has traveled all the way to the Red Sea to hold his breath, descend to depths of more than 200 feet without using fins, and then fight his way to the surface. Doesn't sound relaxing? Well, according to Trubridge, it is relaxing: the intense concentration required by freediving calms and centers Trubridge in much the same way yoga relaxes its practitioners. So for him, freediving is a vacation.
So now, to get to the meat of the question: where do freedivers go on vacation? Apparently, word has gotten out that the reefs and dive sites in Egypt offer some of the most accessible and beautiful diving on the planet. And, according to Lotta Ericson -- co-owner and chief instructor of Freedive Dahab, a company offering freediving courses -- the conditions in the area are perfect for freedivers. If you like the idea of a freediving-themed vacation, there are a lot of other companies offering freediving lessons in the Red Sea area, as well, including Extreme Sports Cafe, Emperor's Divers, and Apnea Academy. Will you see me there? Ha! Don't hold your breath!
