Recently, we mentioned the confusion over the depth of the Oriskany. Navy divers using sonar suggested the flight deck was at about 150 feet. Meanwhile, local divers visiting the wreck claimed their depth gauges read 130 feet when they hit the deck. So who's right? Check out this image, taken by Keith Mille of Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and tell me how deep the wreck is.
4. So we should create a navigational hazard for the sake of a few divers. No offense to you, but most recreational divers would be pretty dangerous to themselves and others on a wreck this size. Quite frankly, I'll wait a few years for the lifeforms to gather before I dive this wreck.
My instructor went a few weeks ago and said that the idiocy that he saw on the wreck was amazing. He saw a guy on a rebreather end up 500 yards from the dive boat. He saw guys diving nitrox. I'm afraid that it's only a matter of time until a few divers don't return to the surface.

5. and whats wrong with diving nitrox? if you stay above 110ft, ean32 is just fine. if you would like to hit the flight deck, a mix of 26-27% would do great. A tec friend of mine dove it recently and offered me the reason for discrepancies on depth of the flight deck. When divers descend from the mooring buoy attached to the tower, they descend to the highest point of the deck. The deck is flat, don't get me wrong, the fact is that the wreck is not sitting even in the water. That is, as you swim closer to the bow, the flight deck is deeper because the ocean floor is not completely flat. Having seen it all the way down to 210ft, he confirmed his suspicion.

1. I think its lame-o-rama that the flight deck isnt at less depth. For all the talk of how long, how big, how much $$$$$... For most recreational divers, all you get to dive is the tower.
If you ask me part of the tower should be sticking out of the water, That would be cool!!!
