Cyclone Larry Reduced Risk of Widespread Coral Bleaching on the GBR?

Cyclone
Larry, courtesy of WikipediaCyclone Larry ripped through northeastern Australia less than two weeks ago, causing widespread damage. However, could there be some good associated with Larry’s formation?

Although we previously reported that the Great Barrier Reef was facing the possibility of the worst coral bleaching on record – prompting some dive companies to begin toying with the idea of selling “bleached coral dives” – some researchers believe the cyclone actually helped stop this catastrophe (the bleaching event…not the bleached coral dives). According to Ove Hoegh-Guldberg from the University of Queensland, Larry stirred the water column and reduced the ocean’s surface temperatures, which is the layer of water that promotes bleaching. Since the surface temperature has cooled, ol’ Ove predicts that the GBR has averted bleaching for at least this year.
