Surface, Episode 14: Reviewed, And Ten Things I Can't Wait For The Finale To Reveal

the mob gets MilesEpisode 14 surprised me with several twists and big revelations. Several times during the episode, we heard characters say, “The cat’s out of the bag.” (Hmmm…could that be foreshadowing, or am I looking too deeply?) Anyway, for the surprises: Lee is genetically engineered…and a nice guy. IDERDEX is working on hundreds of genomic projects. Miles has the ability to electrocute people. Rich and Laura – after weeks of working together – go their own ways. I was really excited by this episode, and I think it serves as an excellent lead-in to next week’s season finale. The show has really found its groove over the past few weeks; for it to be off the air for a while means it’s going to lose lots of momentum, which is really disappointing. Last night was one of the best hours of television I’ve watched in a while, consequently, I give it an A.

Rich and Laura lure Lee out of his office. After a semi-comical fight scene (I don’t know if it was meant to be funny or not), they tape his hands and feet and toss him in the trunk of their car. They go to a hotel and ask him about the movie from 1957, in which he appears. Initially, Lee looks confused and claims he doesn’t know anything about the film. Then he insists that releasing the creatures “wasn’t an accident.” He’s not coming clean, so Rich beats the crap out of him and almost shoots him. They release him and leave. In the car, they argue about what to do next: Rich wants to investigate IDERDEX – the company that created the creatures – but Laura claims it’s too late, that they “can’t destroy the technology,” and that “the cat’s out of the bag.” Claiming she’s tired of being on the lam, she stalks off, leaving Rich alone.

Meanwhile, Miles continues his change. Dogs bark at him. When he meets Caitlin for a meal, he pours salt all over his food, something which has proven to be an attractor for Nim in the past. He can sense Nim before he appears. Nevertheless, he returns to school for the first time in weeks. People are freaked out, call him “mutant” and put dead animals in his locker. Greg, the boyfriend of Savannah, Miles’ sister, trips Miles in the lunchroom. As a result, Savannah claims they’re “over.” Naturally, this makes Greg angry, and he picks a fight with Miles after school. After taking quite a beating, Miles turns it on: he jumps up, twists Greg’s arm with super-human strength, puts his hand on Greg’s forehead and zaps him, and then kicks him like crazy. He’s totally animalistic. Finally, he stops, and he races home.

Meanwhile, the NOAA detects unusual underwater eruptions along the Hispaniola Trench, just south of Puerto Rico…

Laura goes to the school where her son is. Sean appears immediately, followed shortly by Federal agents – including Lee! Sean claims she needs help, and confesses that he called the agents. Lee takes her into custody and interrogates her alone, where he admits that he didn’t know that he was genetically engineered – although he WAS suspicious – since Kessler had been “doing things” to him. Kessler, Laura explains, is dead. Lee says, “There’s so much you don’t know,” and fires his pistol. Lee hasn’t shot anyone, though; he did it to appear that he shot her. He says, “I’ll tell them you’re taken care of.” Laura marvels that she’s being freed. Lee comments that it’s all too late…”The cat’s out of the bag.”

Meanwhile, Rich breaks into a frighteningly Kubrickian IDERDEX and discovers thousands of “cryogenic coolers” on the premises.

Greg’s dad storms Miles’ home, seeking revenge. He claims Greg has suffered third-degree burns all over his body, and he wants Miles to answer for it. He’s brought a gang with him. The cops are already there, and they control the scene for a while. Ultimately, the mob breaks into Miles’ house. Just as they capture him, the policeman fires a rifle and orders everyone to listen to the radio. There’s a National Weather Service representative explaining that the eruptions near the Hispaniola Trench have flooded San Juan and created a proto-tsunami that is racing towards the east coast. Mandatory evacuations are ordered. Suddenly, everyone forgets about Miles, and they flee.

Ten things I can’t wait for the show to answer:

* Are there other genetically-engineered humans, other than Lee?

* Why did IDERDEX release the creatures into the wild – if they released them, at all?

* Will Rich’s brother – as well as the other people who went missing – turn up alive?

* How will Miles “control” or “interact” with the creatures?

* How will humans deal with the arrival of the creatures?

* How are the creatures tied to the tsunami? Did they cause the tsunami of 2004?

* Are the creatures really evil, or are they just misunderstood? Will they help save the from the wave?

* How will Miles, Caitlin, Laura, and Rich join forces, as the previews suggested?

* Who is Kessler? Is he dead or not? Is he the guy wearing the floppy hat in the greenhouse?

* What happened to Jackson?

Did you watch? What did you think?
