Swimming With Giants

diver and raysMonty Halls went on a whiz-bang, 10-week ‘round-the-world-trip with Full Circle Expeditions to dive with some of the world’s biggest animals and film the experience for the UK’s Channel 5. I don’t know what Channel 5 is, exactly, but I found this terrific essay about his experience.

During the filming of “Swimming with Giants,” Halls traveled to Belize, the Bahamas, Mexico, Florida, Galapagos, New Zealand, Palau, Mozambique, Natal, and South Africa's Cape. In search of great whites, dolphins, manatees, mantas, raggedtooth sharks, sting rays and hammerheads, they found pretty much every one of them. Of course, it’s tough to crunch a 2½ month trip into a few thousand word narrative, but Halls compresses his travels into “Most Remarkable Encounter,” “Most Surprising Encounter,” “Most Frightening Experience,” and “Worst Experience (of His Life).” Reading his tale is a great way to start the week!
