Scuba With Mantas in Hawaii

mantaFollowing up on our recent post about snorkeling in Hawaii, here’s a good eco-formational piece/travelogue by Alissa Everett, who recently went swimming with manta rays off Hawaii’s Keauhou Bay. Once labeled “devil fish” by sailors who feared the horn-like features on their heads were a sign of evil, mantas can grow to have wingspans of more than 20 feet and weigh up to 3,000 pounds. They are harmless to humans, but the converse is not true: manta ray populations have decreasing for years, thanks to Asian demand for the manta’s horns for traditional medicines, according to the Manta Pacific Research Foundation.

Recently, the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort opened, and its nighttime lights are attracting the mantas. Visitors can get a topside lecture from local experts; alternatively they can jump in the water and either snorkel ($59) or scuba dive ($69) with these magnificent creatures. Sounds like a good time!
