Chemical weapons dumped at sea ended up on shore in the United States

checmicalHere is a little story about some of the lovely things that were dumped into the ocean and have come back to haunt us. As a society, we used to dump just about everything into the ocean and forget about it, but as explained in this story, it seems that fishermen are pulling up chemical weapons in shallow water. Mustard gas, a substance that will burn on contact and nerve agents, are just some of the items that are ending up in fisherman’s nets and in areas the military didn't realize they actually used as dump sites. So either they are migrating or we just don’t know where everything which is, umm, great to know.

On a local wreck, the USS Hogan,  you sometimes find flares and drop markers that the Navy uses in training exercises, these can burn you if they still contain any reactant; I personally give them a wide berth. The same goes with bullets on some plane wrecks, they should be left alone and not taken home as souvenirs. However, I can’t imagine coming across mustard gas or nerve agent drums underwater, not to mention what that stuff must do to the plant and animal life down there.

Scary. So let's be careful out there.

Thanks Zippy!
