Only a week after Divester mentioned that the U.S. Navy’s subs are (potentially) dangerous for marine animals, the Natural Defense Resources Council (NRDC), sued the Navy over use of sonar, saying the pings cause mass whale and dolphin strandings and internal bleeding. I’d like to claim a causal relationship between our post and the lawsuit, but alas, I think it’s a stretch.
Accusing the Navy of violating environmental laws, the NRDC claims the Navy failed to take precautions that could spare marine animals injury and death. Two years ago, the NRDC and other groups successfully blocked the use of the U.S. Navy's low-frequency sonar system; the new lawsuit targets mid-frequency sonar, which the coalition said can emit noise above 235 decibels and “sounds like a rocket blasting off.”
