Rising Sea Temperatures Threaten East Africa's Coral

coralHot on the heels of the recent Sewage Destroys Corals post, I see that researchers in East Africa are complaining that rising sea temperatures are threatening that region’s coral reefs. According to Dr. David Obura, a climate-change researcher, the reefs in East Africa could be dead within a few decades if sea surface temperatures continue to rise. Obura claims that 70-75% of the shallow-water corals in this region died after getting into, um, hot water during the ‘97-‘98 El Nino.

I am by no means refuting the good doctor’s claims, but to make a more interesting post, I’d like to counter with two recent reports:

* Coral in the Arabian Gulf appear to be capable of withstanding severe temperature fluctuations, including surviving very warm waters.

* Coral reefs are self-regulating and protect themselves from severe weather.
