Sorry, but I couldn't resist looking into this story a little more. I've been on the road a lot lately and haven't been following some of the posts here as closely as I'd like...and so when I came across Willy's wonderful posts about Fabien Cousteau, I just couldn’t resist finding out more. In fact, I just recently posted about the fake shark thing over at Gadling, I liked the idea so much.Well, if you want to see more about the fake shark affectionately called "Troy", check out this excellent article at the Apple site. The article discusses the effort at length, and talks a lot about the young Cousteau's upbringing around his famous father and grandfather.
Cousteu says he was inspired to build the shark after reading a Tintin story called ‘Rackham le Rouge’ when he was seven years old. In the story, Tintin makes a sub in the shape of a shark to ride underwater. Interestingly (and perhaps ominously) for the young Cousteau, his father also built a fake shark vehicle in 1989 and deployed it underwater. That vehicle, we find out, was attacked by a large female Great White and demolished. And one can only imagine what would have happened if someone had been inside.
This is a story really worth following, and I can't wait to catch the program when it comes out.
