Divernet’s Mark Ellyatt recently purchased a 40-year-old, Russian-made IDA59 rebreather and a highly unusual submarine escape suit – over the Internet! In his interesting article, Ellyatt recounts the history of the rebreather – which was used on the deepest-ever sub escape – and explains how it and the suit work together. Interestingly, the equipment cleverly features a wiper blade for clearing the inside of a fogged mask. Although the rebreather system worked flawlessly, Ellyatt decided that the escapes suit will be more for show than for actual use: he got a hole in the boot of the suit, and it flooded.
