Finding Shipwreck Destroyed Man's Life

GunildaWho among us doesn’t think it’d be cool to discover a shipwreck? Who hasn’t wished that it had been us instead of John Chatterton who had found that U-boat, written a book, become famous…?

For those of you who are disappointed that you’re still, well, you – here’s a story that reminds us that sometimes getting what you wish for isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Fred Broennle discovered the Gunilda 25 years ago, only to have the discovery destroy his life. Gunilda lies 300 feet below the surface of Lake Superior. So far, Broennle has lost invested 2 wives, several fortunes, 1 dive buddy, his business, and 35 years of his life to recovering the so-called “jewelry store” under the Lake. It’s a great, yet sad, story that illustrates how love and obsession, while similar, are two very different beasts.
