Here’s an update concerning yesterday’s story about
fishermen off Reunion Island allegedly using dogs as shark bait. According to
The Sun – the British tabloid that broke the story – yesterday
Reunion police officers arrested a man using puppies as shark bait; he appears in court tomorrow. Probably not coincidentally, the animal welfare group
Sea Shepherd agreed to pay 1000 Euros (US$1200) to any cop who catches a fisherman baiting a dog.
Evidently (and unfortunately), the practice of using dogs as shark bait is common – not only in Reunion, but elsewhere, including Vanuatu.
