A DIY ROV That Uses Atari Joysticks As Controllers

BOBWe recently mentioned a homemade $99 ROV that some people complained wasn't really a ROV. Well, here's another DIY ROV that uses $20 bilge pumps as thrusters; and eBay’ed vintage Atari joysticks as controllers (the use of which the designer discusses at length). Doug Jackson named his contraption BOB. Total cost was around $500; the underwater camera system accounted for half that.

BOB is 19 inches long, 13 inches wide and 9 inches tall (including the floats on top). Jackson provides very detailed instructions, so interested readers can build their own BOBs. However, if you’re not an engineer, the instructions are probably going to zoom right over you head. Nevertheless, a lake trial yielded great results, although the current and lack of viewable field were some of the concerns Jackson raised. One day, BOB might be hovering next to you, providing you with the supplemental tanks you left on the dive boat.
