Florida's Red Tide is Hyper-Efficient Killer

sea turtlesA number of turtles – including several endangered species – have been washing up on Florida’s west coast over the past few months. Most experts have blamed the deaths on red tide, despite reports that Hurricane Dennis had washed away the lethal algal bloom. Moreover, divers say they have documented a giant dead zone 20 miles off the state’s Gulf coast. This dead zone is peculiar in that it kills every single marine organism that passes through it. That can't be good for dive opeartors. Or for marine animals.

Scientists speculate that a thermocline has trapped the red tide in place longer than it would normally stay – allowing it to mutate into a far more efficient killer. Frustratingly, the toxic atmosphere worsens as dead organisms decompose, making the red tide even more powerful and killing even more organisms. It's cyclical.

Check out this interesting piece to learn more about red tide intoxication and to see what steps the Clearwater Aquarium is taking to save the dozens of dying sea turtles it’s rescued over the past few days.
