WW2 Wreck Looters, Arrested, Escape, and Die

wreck divingLast week, a Philippines patrol vessel spotted 5 men who appeared to be looting the scuttled USS New York in Subic Bay. When the patrol vessel approached the divers, one man jumped into the water; he was critically injured attempting to escape and died on the way to a local hospital. A second diver was arrested at the scene. Officials are searching for the three remaining divers who escaped during the brouhaha.

If you’re interested in learning what diving the USS New York is like, check out Dave Ross’ account of his 11 dives on the wreck. Apparently, it’s a moderately technical dive, with the level of difficulty increasing as divers penetrate the ship.
