Last week, I mentioned the
8th International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition taking place in
San Diego. I’ve been waiting for the results to be posted, and they have been. The
University of
Florida’s
Subjugator took top honors this year, dethroning last year’s champs, MIT (who placed third). What I’m most impressed with, however, is the fact that the
Amador Valley High School team placed fifth, ahead of 14 universities! Congratulations, guys! For those of you who are interested, here are the
final standings, and here is an outline of what the AUVs were supposed to accomplish:
Mission #1 – Rendezvous with a “docking station.”
Mission #2 – Find and mark a break in an underwater pipeline.
Mission #3 – Home in on an acoustic beacon and breech within a marked surface zone.
