DIY Underwater ROV for $100

ROVDrat; Engadget beat us to this post. Some dudes have fabricated an underwater ROV for $100. Made in 2 weeks, and equipped with 2 cameras and an IR illumination for night vision (in case they bump into Paris down there), the unit is arguably not an ROV (as many of Engadget’s commenters have indignantly pointed out), because it has no thrusters. Rather, to move, it relies on being towed. I guess it’s more of an underwater camera that you don’t dive with; you chuck it overboard, drag it along, haul it up, and see what it’s recorded. For $100, though, it’s a neat prototype.
