I loved this piece about the International Submarine Race, which is held every other year in Bethesda, Maryland. More than just a race, though, contestants also design and build their own human-powered subs and then race them in a basin located on the campus of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The submarines are all "wet submarines," meaning they fill with water when submerged, and submarine pilots must use scuba equipment to breathe while steering and powering the boat.
This year's race has 18 teams – one team has traveled all the way from the Netherlands to compete! – and close to 200 contestants. Teams can have as little as one member, but they may have as many as they need. Although most teams are composed of college students, there are even two high school teams – one from San Diego and the other from Brooksville, Fla. Sounds like fun!
