Last night I was at a local bar called “The Lizard’s Den.” I was drinking beer with my wife and grooving to the sounds of a local band. Man, they were great. Meanwhile, Divester reader Zippy [thanks, Dude!] was at home, monitoring scuba news, and when he heard something, he emailed us with the heads-up.
In Destin, Florida, on Saturday, two young teens were swimming 100 yards offshore. Evidently, they saw a school of fish and swam over to inspect. Then, a shark attacked one of the girls, biting her thigh. A surfer heard screaming, grabbed the other girl, punched the shark on the nose (!), and surfed with the friend to shore. Later, some people towed the victim to shore on a raft; the 14-year-old girl died before arriving at the hospital. According to George Burgess, a local shark expert, he suspects either a bull or tiger shark committed the attack.
I don’t want to contribute to the sensationalism/hysteria surrounding summertime shark attacks, but I thought this was a noteworthy event.
