Dive the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

Flatworm, a resident of the areaI just mentioned the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve and the attempts to designate it the 14th Marine Sanctuary in the U.S. However, I didn’t know much about the area, so I decided to learn more. According to NOAA, the area spans 1200 miles; features dozens of small islands, shoals, and atolls; and is home to some 7000 (!) aquatic species.

NOAA’s website about the area is great. They have tons of information about the reserve’s inhabitants, organized by species-type (mammals, fish, invertebrates, etc.), that explains such thing as diet, endangered-status-level, distribution, and more. In my mind, though, the best feature is the truly amazing videos of the animals (e.g., check out the video of the Humpback Whale). Be warned: the video-music is a little cheesy – my wife asked if I were watching Little House on the Prairie.

Visiting NOAA’s website will only make you want to visit the Reserve. Unfortunately, Midway Island is the only place recreational divers can dive in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. No problem: they have dive operations in Midway. For the curious, here’s a map featuring some of the best dive sites in Midway.
