Some Dolphins Use Tools

Dolphin using a spongeWe all know dolphins are smart, and it seems that they’re getting much smarter, much faster than humans. Soon, they’ll rule the planet. To wit: researchers in Australia have seen mother-dolphins teaching their offspring to collect pieces of sponge and affix them to their snouts to serve as protection when scouring the seafloor for food. This way, dolphin-babies (known as “calves”) protect their noses from stonefish and other stinging creatures. Either that, or the dolphins just want to ruin anxious scuba diver's pictures.

The researchers found that tool-use occurs almost exclusively among mothers and female calves. They attribute this to the fact that male dolphins spend the bulk of their time chasing females as opposed to foraging for food. (Hmmm . . . sounds like me during my bachelor days.)
